What does it mean to have a second chance? Have you ever received a second chance that really made a difference in your life? Have you ever extended to someone a second chance?
Have you ever wasted a second chance? What were the consequences?
God is a God of second chances. Motivated by unconditional love, He continues to extend to us chance after chance to change our heart and make our way home. But God will never force us to make this choice; He is too respectful of our freedom to invade it with His Will. But these second chances do not go on forever!
The parable of the fig tree is terrifying. The tree is full of leaves but that’s not what it meant to produce. It’s a fruit tree and only by its fruit it can be evaluated. After three years the tree looks good, but it’s barren. The owner of the land makes a difficult choice: cut it down. By the intercession of the gardner the tree gets another chance — one more year to yield fruit.
How does the story end? Although the Gospel text continues, this week we are not given the end because we can make our own. We cannot avoid thinking about our own lives and all the second chances that God has given us. Have we all taken them and use them appropriately? Or wasted? What would happen to us if this was our last year here on earth?
The Gospel is always good news, even when the message it contains may scare us. God is constantly giving His life to us. How are we going to receive this message? Are we going to let Him transform us?

The Mission
of Heavenwards
May 24, 2003. The day of my ordination. As I prepared myself to receive the Sacrament of Holy Orders, I asked the Lord to give me a word that would exemplify my ministry. As I began my prayer, I read the letter of Paul to the Ephesians and these words, "Living the truth in Love" (Eph 4:15) in particular struck my heart. I felt the Holy Spirit was asking me to stop there. I did, and I became aware that those words contained all that I was asking. "To Live" points to the fact that Christianity is a dynamic lifestyle. Christianity is a way of living based on the Good News. "The Truth" points to Jesus. The Truth is not something we believe in but, first and foremost truth is a person, Jesus. "In Love" encapsulate all we have to do and how we do it. To love is to fulfill the law (Rom 13:8). This is the reason and the mission of heavenwards.org: to help anyone who wants to be empowered to be a disciple of Jesus by putting into practice the Gospel.
